AK-GGBS

Introduction

AK-GGBS® Ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS) under the “AK-GGBS” brand name is brand, which has established itself as a superior cementitious material that can be used as partial substitute of conventional cement for producing high performance concrete presently, from our associate plants in India and China based on the Client’s requirement. In addition, we can also supply the high quality raw slag (GBS) from the steel plants.
GGBS is a sustainable alternative for Portland Cement in the production of:

  • ready-mix concrete
  • ready-mix concrete
  • cement-based formulations
  • soil stabilisation

GGBS helps to form a next-generation cement that reduces damage to the environment.

  1. 1
    Product Description

AK-GGBS® Granulated Blast furnace Slag (GGBS) is a cement substitute, manufactured from a by-product of the iron-making industry. Subsequently, GBS is dried and then grinded into the desired fineness. The main hydration product of AK-GGBS® is the same as Portland cement, that is, calcium-silica-hydrate, which is the major chemical compound providing strength to harden concrete. AK-GGBS® has more stable chemical constituents as compared to other mineral additives, such as fly ash and silica fume. AK-GGBS® is sourced from various plants, which are subject to rigorous testing including Independent labs and packed as per Client’s requirements.

  2. 2
    Benefits of using AK-GGBS®

    Sustainable & Durable:

    • More sustainable and durable concrete
    • Pore refinement and grain refinement
    • Lasts longer in aggressive environments
    • Increased resistance to attack in peaty/acidic environments
    • Increased resistance to attack in marine environments
    • Reduces in heat of hydration
    • Consistent ethos Reduces risk of cracking.

    Appearance:

    • Superior lighter color concrete-near white
    • Aesthetically pleasing
    • Reduced efflorescence
    • Greater reflective, providing better visibility
    • Can be used as a replacement for White cement, with only a minimal difference

    Cost-effective:

GGBS in concrete can be up to 70% as against 35% for fly ash and reduces requirement of cement for same strength thus reduces the cost of concrete.

    Aesthetic finish
A much lighter coloured concrete finish can be achieved compared to Portland Cement based concrete. GGBS also helps to improve the reflectivity of finished materials (improving safety in dark environments) and contribute towards the reduction of crystalline deposits on concrete surfaces.

    Environmental:

    • Very low environmental impact
    • Truly Green and Low Carbon
    • Used to minimize the embodied CO2 and embodied energy of concrete products.

    Addition rates and Compatibility

For general-purpose applications, concrete containing between 30% and 70% AK-GGBS® is most suitable. The exact proportion of AK-GGBS® used in the mix for optimum results will depend on other factors such as Cement content, Placing method & Strength requirements.Where long term durability is an essential requirement, a minimum AK-GGBS® content of at least 30% (or higher) by weight of the cementitious content is often specified. Normal admixtures can be used in concrete containing AK-GGBS® though some manufacturers offer admixtures that are designed specifically to work with the finer particle size of GGBS.

  6. 6
    Health and Safety

AK-GGBS® is not considered to be hazardous to health; however it should be handled in accordance with good occupational hygiene and safety practices. High concentrations of dust may cause irritation. It is recommended that Personal Protective Equipment including eye protection, hand and skin protection and dust masks are worn when handling this product. For further information see the Health and Safety information sheet for AK-GGBS®.

Application

Portland cement

Including GGBS in a concrete mix helps to protect from sources of damage and significantly improves the durability of concrete.

High density

Replacing fine and coarse aggregates in concrete with LKAB Minerals natural aggregate MagnaDense allows you to produce heavy weight concrete with a high density of up to 4.0 t/m3.

Decorative natural

DekorFlake is a range of natural Mica flakes designed to impart a decorative metallic effect and aesthetic appeal to building and construction applications.
