AK-SODA ASH

What is Soda Ash

Soda ash, the trade name for sodium carbonate (Na 2 CO 3 ), is a white, anhydrous, powdered or granular material. It is an essential raw material used in the manufacturing of glass, detergents chemicals and other industrial products.

As such, soda ash is one of the most widely used and important commodities in the United States, contributing substantially to the gross domestic product. For this reason, the Federal Reserve Board incorporates monthly soda ash production data into monthly economic indicators used to monitor the condition
of the U.S. economy.

Sodium carbonate has been used in manufacturing for over 5,000 years. Ancient Egyptians used it to make glass ornaments and vessels. They recovered the product from dry lake-bed deposits or by burning seaweed and other marine plants. The Romans also used soda ash for baking bread, making glass and for medicinal purposes. Its extraction from the ashes of various plants continued until the middle of the 19th century and gave it the present-day name of soda Ash.

  1. 1
    Product Description

Sodium carbonate is used in the production of high performance powder detergents for laundry and dish washing. Sodium carbonate is a very efficient source of alkalinity reserve and plays an important role in water softening. As a result it has been approved by many detergent producers in nil-phosphate containing formulations. It may also be used for the direct soaking of clothes, dish washing, floor washing and for decreasing operations.

Sodium carbonate  is the chemical name for soda ash and washing soda. Major source of soda ash is trona ore. Sodium carbonate occurs naturally in arid regions. It is found in the form of deposits on locations where lakes evaporate.
Sodium carbonate is one of the most basic industrial chemicals. It is found in large natural deposits and is mined in Wyoming.

    Benefits of using AK-Sodaash

The benefits and advantages of using fly ash in concrete can be summarised as follows:

    • The reduced water content of the concrete mix improves long term strength performance and durability.
    • Reduces permeability, which reduces shrinkage, creep and gives greater resistance to chloride ingress and sulphate attack.
    • Minimises the risk of alkali silica reaction I Reduces the temperature rise in thick sections i.e. heat of hydration.
    • Makes more cohesive concrete that has a reduced rate of bleeding,is easier to compact, gives better pumping properties and improves the finish of the off shutter concrete.

    Physical Properties

Sodium bicarbonate is an odorless, white crystalline solid or fine powder. It has a slightly alkaline taste. Its density is 2.20 g mL -1  and it decomposes in temperatures above 50 ºC. The decomposition yields to sodium carbonate. It is highly soluble in water and poorly soluble in acetone and methanol. It is insoluble in ethanol.

    Health effects/safety

Sodium carbonate solutions are strongly alkaline and corrosive. It can cause severe skin and eye irritation upon contact. Inhalation of sodium carbonate dust or fumes can cause irritation of mucous membranes and the respiratory tract, and lead to severe coughing and shortness of breath. High concentrations can damage the eye and cause skin burns.

Application

Industrial applications

Being a highly soluble substance, soda ash is used for numerous chemical reactions. It’s mostly used as an ingredient in the manufacture of dyes and coloring agents, synthetic detergents and fertilizers. It’s also an important chemical agent used in enameling and petroleum industries.

Detergent manufacture

Soda ash is replacing phosphates that were earlier being used in a number of household detergents. Many other cleaning products such as dishwashing soaps also contain varying amounts of soda ash in their formulations.

Environmental

Sodium carbonate is used to improve and treat the alkalinity of lakes that have been affected by rain. It is also used to reduce the acidity of emissions being generated from a power plant.
